The iconic Balloon Dog
Originally conceived in the 1990s, Jeff Koons’ Balloon Dog embodies a sophisticated dialogue between childhood wonder, playfulness, and artistic perception.
By reimagining the familiar balloon animal at monumental scale in immaculate industrial materials, Koons turns an ephemeral object of joy into a timeless work of contemporary art, dissolving the boundaries between high culture and popular imagery.
Balloon Dog (Blue), created between 1994 and 2000, is one of the defining highlights of The Broad museum’s collection and endures as one of the most iconic symbols of contemporary creativity.
About the Artist
Jeff Koons is a leading contemporary artist known for transforming everyday objects into bold, reflective sculptures that engage with art history and modern culture. Born in 1955 in York, Pennsylvania, he studied at the Maryland Institute College of Art and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Since his first solo exhibition in 1980, his work has been showcased globally in major institutions like MoMA, the Guggenheim, and Tate and of course, The Broad.
Koons' iconic pieces, including Balloon Dog, Rabbit, and Puppy, explore themes of self-acceptance and transcendence. His monumental floral sculptures and mirror-finished stainless steel works challenge perceptions of materiality and craftsmanship.
Honored internationally, Koons has received the Légion d’Honneur from France and the U.S. Department of State’s Medal of the Arts. He has also contributed to cultural diplomacy and child protection efforts through the Koons Family International Law and Policy Institute.

Born to celebrate The Broad's 10th anniversary in September 2025, this collaboration with Lexon and Jeff Koons continues the museum’s mission to democratize art, extending iconic works beyond the gallery and into everyday life. The Balloon Dog Speaker and Lamp will be showcased to the public for the first time at The Broad on September 20th, marking a milestone in the museum's 10th anniversary celebrations by offering a real-life experience of these reimagined iconic works.

Crafting the Extraordinary
Transforming Jeff Koons’ Balloon Dog into a fully functional design object was a true feat of engineering, innovation, and contemporary design. More than 50,000 hours of development were devoted to perfecting every curve, material, and integrated technology, ensuring that each piece reflects the artistic spirit of Koons’ iconic work while delivering high-quality sound and light performance.
One of the greatest challenges of this Jeff Koons x Lexon collaboration was preserving the instantly recognizable sculptural form of Balloon Dog while incorporating advanced audio and lighting technology into a translucent body. From material innovation and precision acoustic calibration to LED diffusion engineering, every detail was carefully developed to merge contemporary art, functional design, and cutting-edge technology.
For the 2026 edition, the introduction of color added a new level of technical complexity. Matching finishes, tones, and materials across two different product types required exceptional precision, ensuring a consistent visual identity throughout the collection while maintaining the highest standards of design and performance.
